Understanding Design Culture from East to West: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Teaching

Design Culture surpasses disciplinary boundaries by providing transvergent methods to global matters. History shows that disciplinary education, based on local understandings, provides answers only to a fragment of wicked problems. Providing two transdisciplinary case studies, which include institutions in Turkey, Switzerland, Germany, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia. POSIAC (Perception of Space in Architecture and Culture) and ‘Inspired by Singapore: Co-Design for Healthy Ageing’ (Design and Nursing) both tackle design culture issues through transdisciplinary practice. This chapter provides a framework of transvergent design operations. Learning outcomes of global transdisciplinary education that feed on design bring together disciplines in novel ways. They provide the grounds for participants to take productive risks, as well as preparing them for real world experiences. The significance of this research lies in the depth of the case studies and their implementation in unique ways.
