Disorientation, Creativity, and Performance in Liminal Spaces: A Case Study of a Writer in Residence at Heathrow Airport and Oval Underground Station

This chapter explores the concept of liminality, in both the physical and metaphorical sense, and posits that the inherent nature of disorientation experienced in these transitory places and spaces can create opportunities for people to be creative and open to new concepts of performance. This consequential performance can create a fresh sense of community—one which brings together the commonality of humanity with fewer conceptual barriers than with typical associations of community. It is more democratic and brings in multiple, layered voices which may not engage in more traditional forms of performance, consequently diversifying both the concept and range of participation in the process of performance.

Keywords: commonality ; community ; creative writing ; creativity ; disorientation ; liminal ; liminality ; poetry ; spaces ; writer in residence
