Based on interviews and correspondence with co-editors, Michael Pinchbeck and Ollie Smith, Paul Jenkins, the conductor of the Knighton Chamber orchestra and University of Leicester orchestra in Concerto, sets the scene for his contribution to the devising process and involvement in the orchestral performance. This chapter is taken from that correspondence to form a creative response to the process and a critical reflection on his contribution as a conductor, taking as its starting point the conductor's mantra to 'Breathe with your arms'. From his testimony, it is clear that Jenkins too sought to know all aspects and dimensions of the work and realize it, rather than interpret it, working with the director, performers, orchestra, and pianist. He became a collaborator, as well as a co-deviser in the making of the show. As such the book includes the conductor's contribution, sharing musical perspectives and responses to its audience and critical reception.
