This paper investigates hybrid church architecture built in Huế, Vietnam's former capital and the seat of the country's last dynasty, during the better half of the twentieth century. It seeks to trace the evolution of the Vietnamese Church from a colonial to a national one, from a transcultural hybrid form to a claim on a common root through the deliberate incorporation of local architecture. It plans to do so by analyzing fieldwork and archival materials using the architectural typology method. As a contact zone, the churches challenge the notion of agency often attributed to migrants from a dominant culture: the colonizers' inability to fully control what gets absorbed into the local culture and the colonized's capacity to determine what gets selected and reinvented. They also demonstrate Vietnamese Catholics' aspiration for religious independence and a nationalist sentiment deeply rooted in the colonial period and inseparable from the country's decolonization history, despite their contested place within mainstream narratives.

Keywords: agency ; architecture and nationalism ; church architecture ; contact zone ; decolonization ; local architecture ; migrant architecture ; postcolonial city ; transcultural hybridity ; Vietnamese Catholicism
