This chapter focuses on Billy Joel's ‘New York State of Mind’ as featured on his studio album, Turnstiles (1976). It provides findings of vocal, musical and lyrical analyses of Joel's song and delivery which are contextualised alongside the song's visual and synchronised adaptations. The chapter details the ways in which ‘New York State of Mind’ extends beyond its autobiographical context, and commemorates a city with its distinctive New York neighbourhoods and features. Collectively, the song is found to offer a musical soundscape that mirrors the contrasting sounds, sights and lived experiences of an invigorated metropolis.
