Mediated Participatory Urban Planning and Design: An Interdisciplinary Framework

image of Mediated Participatory Urban Planning and Design: An Interdisciplinary Framework

This paper describes a theoretical, interdisciplinary framework for mediated participatory urban planning and design. More specifically, the framework aims to provide a theoretical background and overview for participatory urban planning that integrates digital and virtual city technologies, such as virtual world simulators, with interaction design methodology. Concepts related to perceptions of space and place, community, and mediated spaces play a pivotal role in this field, but they must be combined with a sound understanding of the different digital technologies – such as GIS-3D visualisation technologies – in order to provide a successful, applicable planning and discussion approach.

Keywords: 3D visualisation tools ; community ; interaction design ; mediated urban spaces ; Sense of place ; virtual worlds technologies
