At the end of February 1968, Algiers hosted the Second General Assembly and First Congress of the Association Internationale des Documentaristes (AID), which had been founded in October 1964 during the Manheim Film Festival by some of the world's most prominent documentarists: John Grierson (Great Britain) as President; Joris Ivens (Holland), Georges Rouquier (France) and Richard Leacock (USA) as Vice Presidents; Gian Vittorio Baldi (Italy) as General Secretariat; Henri Storck (Belgium) as Treasurer, and the following members: Jean Rouch (France), Edgar Anstey (Great Britain), Roger Leenhardt (France), Roussos Coundouros (Greece), Jerzy Bossak (Poland), Margot Benacerraf (Venezuela), Nelo Risi (Italy), and Jørgen Roos (Denmark).
This article deals with the 1968 AID Congress that gave the Association a level of visibility that transcended the fundamentally European festivals that it had taken part in until then and open it to the so-called ‘Third World’.
