Writing Belonging at the Millennium
By Emily PotterIn Writing Belonging at the Millennium, Emily Potter critically considers the long-standing settler-colonial pursuit of belonging manifested through an obsession with firm and stable ground. This pursuit continues across the field of the postcolonial nation today; the recognition of colonization’s destructive impacts on humans and environments troublingly generates a renewed desire to secure non-indigenous belonging. Focusing on the crucial role that Australia’s contemporary literature plays in shaping ideas of place and its inhabitation, Potter tracks non-indigenous belonging claims through a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to examine how settler-colonial anxieties about belonging intersect with intensifying environmental challenges. Significantly, she proposes that new understandings of unsettled and uncertain non-indigenous belonging may actually be fruitful context for decolonizing relations with place – something that is imperative in a time of heightened global environmental crisis.

World-Wide-Walks
[This book presents Peter d'Agostino's World-Wide-Walks project, providing a unique perspective on walking practices across time and place considered through the framework of evolving technologies and changes in climate. Performed on six continents during the past five decades, d'Agostino's work lays a groundwork for considering walks as portals for crossing natural, cultural and virtual frontiers.
Broad in scope, it addresses topics ranging from historical concerns including traditional Australian Aboriginal rites of passage and the exploits of explorers such as John Ledyard, to artists' walks and related themes covered in the mass media in recent years. D'Agostino's work shows that the act of walking places the individual within a world of empirical awareness, statistical knowledge, expectation and surprise through phenomena like anticipating unknown encounters around the bend. In mediating the frontiers of human knowledge, walking and other forms of exploration remain a critical means of engaging global challenges, especially notable now as environmental boundaries are undergoing radical and potential cataclysmic change.

Watching Films
Whether we stream them on our laptops, enjoy them in theatres or slide them into DVD players to watch on our TVs, movies are part of what it means to be socially connected in the twenty-first century. Despite its significant role in our lives, the act of watching films remains an area of social activity that is little studied and thus, little understood.
In Watching Films, an international cast of contributors correct this problem with a comprehensive investigation of movie going, cinema exhibition, and film reception around the world. With a focus on the social, economic and cultural factors that influence how we watch and think about movies, this volume centres its investigations on four areas of inquiry: Who watches films? More LessThe aim of the Watching series is to draw attention to some of the very interesting items around us, things that perhaps we don't notice as much as we might. The first was Bridge Watching, and when this was put ''on the Net'' it produced, to the surprise of the author, such a pleasant flood of e-mail that another was written, called Water Watching. This, too, was kindly received. So it was tempting to continue with the theme. Water watchers enjoy this pleasurable pastime, whatever their educational background; but more knowledge of what to look for will, it is hoped, lead to even more satisfaction. The intention is to encourage interest in looking at water or watery fluids, which are all around us. You don't need any equipment, licences or permits, nor any special qualifications, other than some curiosity, a sense of wonder. The treatment won't be too technical, but hopes to show you how some natural laws control the behaviour and appearance of water. Some knowledge of this can make water so much more fascinating, wherever you see it. There is a great variety of surface water to be seen, waterfalls, streams, rivers, puddles, and lakes; there is rain, snow, hail, frost and dew, as well. The total amount of water on our planet doesn't change. It just goes round and round, in its passage sustaining life in all its forms. Water-watchers can look at it during the different stages of its cyclic tour. So, besides enabling every living thing to exist, water provides free intriguing entertainment, to charm us with its magic. We can all take advantage of it.
