Abstract
In a brilliant and enigmatic film, Happy End, director Jung Ji-woo has indexed all of these themes: shifting gender hierarchies, the valorization of aggressive masculinity, the establishment of a modern national identity, and the social uncertainties of a faltering economy. Happy End is a film clearly situated within the significant political, economic, and social events of the period within which it was made.
