Abstract

Abstract

Film production started in India in 1896 almost simultaneously along with other filmmaking countries (Mazumdar, 2007: xv). The Indian film industry, both the regional and the mainstream, together spin out at least 1,000 films per year, according to an estimate (Thoraval, 2000: xi). According to the website of The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA), nearly 23 million people in India watch a film daily on an average (http://www.iifa.com/Indianfilmindustry. html).
