The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism presents a blend of opportunities and challenges. This study interrogates journalism identity construction with AI use in newsrooms. Employing discourse theory and social identity theory as frameworks, this study used in-depth interviews with nine African journalists. The findings reveal that journalists recognize AI’s efficiency in tasks like content distribution and fact-checking, yet express concerns over job security, ethical implications and the preservation of cultural sensitivity in AI-generated content. Findings highlight AI’s dual role as an enhancer of journalistic practices and a potential disruptor of cultural norms. By offering insights into AI’s impact in the African context, this research paves the way for future exploration in this critical, rapidly evolving field.
