Abstract

A growth in transnational mobility as a result of globalization has led to many countries experiencing increased and more diverse migratory flows. The response at the level of the nation state has been a general move towards more stringent immigration and naturalization policies. In several countries this has included the introduction of knowledge and language testing for those applying for citizenship and a pre-language requirement as a condition of entry for some migrants.
