Abstract

The staging of listening ecologies involves particular compositional strategies that inform the listening from the position of the audience. The following article discusses a compositional consideration from the performance director’s point of view on how to stage listening ecologies informed by telemedial operations. The system of influence persists as a feature of the architectural site, as a kind of spatial notation embedded as mediating operations, which promotes particular kinds of acoustic appearance. The direction of attention, the sensing of sound and the experiential interpretation are considered essential elements in the act of listening, and the audience are considered part co-author of the listening activities. The audience perform their participation in the emergent sound experience as an essential quality of the listening. Concepts of hesitation, extended moments and delay are developed to facilitate an approach to asymmetric telemedia composition. The compositional concept of intermediality is introduced to enable a strategic overview on the compositional practice in complex telemedia settings. The experiential listening position in-between-media evolves intermediality occurrences through a complex of acoustic relations and interferences.
