Abstract

This article explores the relation between the process of urbanization and industrialization, examining how they contributed to the emergence of what has been described as popular culture in the cultural studies literature. In addition it emphasizes the relationship between urban development and the public imagination, emphasizing how that imagination was informed by the representations of cities in popular culture. It concludes with an examination of different media in cities and their role in the communicative constitution of cities as a whole.
