Abstract

Through an Arts-Based Educational Research (ABER) methodology, we explore the urban perceptions of fourth-year university students from the School of Education at the University of Granada (Spain). ABER methodologies provide a subtle, representative and sensitive approach to the urban experience. In this study, we surveyed 130 students, asking them to draw and cut out a city map of Granada. This was done in order to reveal the known boundaries of the city and to identify the parts yet to be discovered by the students. With these answers as collected data, an ABER analysis was carried out through the production of visual media. Assessing findings quantitatively and visually allowed for the further investigation of students’ knowledge of the city. This inquiry questions the role of the graphic map in research and the boundaries between its technical and artistic values. These findings validate the use of ABER instruments to investigate the city and enhance understanding of the way students live the urban life.

Resumen

A partir de una metodología de Investigación Educativa Basada en las Artes (ABER) exploramos las percepciones urbanas de los estudiantes de cuarto curso de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad de Granada (España). Los métodos ABER proporcionan un enfoque sutil, representativo y sensible sobre la experiencia urbana. Se realizó una encuesta a unos ciento treinta estudiantes, pidiéndoles que dibujaran y recortaran el mapa de Granada para determinar los límites de la ciudad que conocen y revelar aquellas zonas que aún les quedan por descubrir. Una vez recogidos estos datos, se llevó a cabo un análisis ABER a través de la producción de medias visuales. La evaluación cuantitativa y visual de los hallazgos permitió profundizar en el conocimiento de la ciudad por parte de los estudiantes. Esta investigación cuestiona el papel del mapa gráfico en la investigación y los límites entre sus valores técnicos y artísticos. Estos resultados validan el uso de los instrumentos del ABER para investigar lo urbano y entender la forma en que los estudiantes viven la ciudad.

Résumé

À partir de la méthodologie ABER (Arts-Based Educational Research), nous explorons les perceptions urbaines des étudiants universitaires de quatrième année de la Faculté des Sciences de l’Éducation de l’Université de Grenade (Espagne). Les méthodes ABER offrent une approche subtile, représentative et sensible de l’expérience urbaine. Nous avons interrogé environ cent trente étudiants et leur avons demandé de dessiner et de découper un plan de Grenade pour révéler quelles sont pour eux les limites connues de la ville et les parties qu’il leur reste à découvrir. Après avoir collecté ces réponses, une analyse ABER a été réalisée à partir de moyennes visuelles. L’évaluation quantitative et visuelle des résultats a permis d’approfondir les connaissances des élèves sur la ville. Cette enquête questionne le rôle de la carte graphique dans la recherche et les frontières entre ses valeurs techniques et artistiques. Ces résultats valident l’utilisation des instruments ABER pour étudier la ville et comprendre la façon dont les élèves vivent dans la cité.
