Abstract

This is the first bibliography to list and to comment on representations of India in French literary and historical texts, with a critical and comparative focus on the fact of British Indian Empire. The list will aid the much-needed comparative study of anglo- and francophone epistemologies in colonial and post-colonial India. For anglophone post-colonial scholars, it opens up the hitherto neglected fields of: French-language writing about British colonial India, about French colonial possessions in India and of comparative studies of both. And for francophone scholars and French Indologists, it highlights important English-language studies, which incorporate post-colonial theory and criticism.
