Abstract

This essay proposes a framework for a typology of films produced in or about Africa from the 1950s to the present. It re-explores the controversial issue of Africanity that should neither be a theoretical ghetto nor another essentialist category. By considering African any cultural production that involves Africa as a category of analysis, the typology exposed here explores various avenues in the determination of African cinema. It also establishes new theoretical constructs that better reflect the various aesthetic and ideological permutations displayed in post-1990 filmmakers by determining how, beyond various accompanying discourses, film-makers address issues and express them in a new cinematic language.
