Screening Ecosystems: Activism, Representation and Documentary Practice in Africa

Abstract

Since the late twentieth century, African filmmakers have devoted themselves with tireless dedication and activism to environmental challenges that continue to alarm, even globally. Their lands are endangered, and their communities are severely affected in their living environment. There are major challenges, ever more urgent, about their ecosystems, but also about the neighbouring geographies and finally about the planet in general. Using a body of documentaries concerned with ecosystems on the continent, this study examines African filmmakers’ perspectives on ecosystem degradation in various African contexts while highlighting the ethics and aesthetics of their practices confronting the representation of a seemingly dystopian world. In response to the alarming discourses and desolate visions, this article underscores the filmmakers’ response to urgent ecological needs, and examines their activism in the search for green solutions in Africa.

Résumé

Depuis la fin du XXe siècle, les cinéastes africains se dévouent avec une infatigable ardeur et un activisme convaincu aux défis environnementaux qui ne cessent d’alarmer, même mondialement. Leurs terres sont en danger et leurs communautés sont gravement affectées dans leur milieu de vie. Des défis de taille se posent, sans cesse plus urgents, au sujet des terres, mais aussi des géographies voisines et finalement de la planète en général. À l’aide d’un corpus de documentaires concernés par les écosystèmes sur le continent, cet article se propose d’examiner les perspectives des cinéastes africains sur la dégradation des écosystèmes dans divers contextes africains tout en mettant en valeur l’éthique et la valeur axiale de leurs pratiques vis-à-vis de cette représentation d’un monde d’allure irréelle, vraiment dystopique. En réponse aux discours alarmistes et aux visions désolantes, cette étude relève leur prise de position pour approfondir la question et répondre aux urgentes nécessités écologiques. Cet article examine aussi la réponse des cinéastes à la recherche de solutions vertes en Afrique.
