Armada? What Armada? Spanish reaction to the 1916 Easter Uprising and the path to Irish independence

The aim of this article will be to examine the various responses and reactions in Spanish official circles and in the mainly Castilian conservative and liberal press to the revolutionary events which unfurled in Ireland from 1916 to 1922, within the context of Spanish foreign and domestic policy during this period. As well as assessing the official governmental response, the paper will analyse the currents of opinion prevailing within Spanish/Castilian society and gauge how events between their old historical ally and Britain were viewed in the reality of early twentieth-century foreign policy.
