Abstract

Since the late 2000s, creators of cultural products have imagined a future Catalonia with its independent institutions as the result of a collective effort driven by the citizens, rather than just the elites. In this article, I posit that the representation of the Catalan republic as benign, horizontal and modern shows tensions and omissions in aspects such as coercion, economic freedom, social protection, bureaucracy, language policies and the handling of immigration. This articulation is exemplified in the journalistic fiction (2009) by Patrícia Gabancho, the documentary (2014a) by Isona Passola and the essay (2017) by Antonio Baños. The unproblematic and contradictory depiction of the state reveals latent fears derived from the historical difficulty to fit this political institution into the complex reality of the nation. Moreover, the cultural products analysed show the need to stabilize the new meanings related to the signifiers and in Catalan culture.

Resumen

Desde finales de la década del 2000, los creadores de productos culturales han imaginado una futura Cataluña con sus instituciones independientes como resultado de un esfuerzo colectivo dirigido por sus ciudadanos, en lugar de las élites. En este trabajo, se propone que la representación de la república catalana como benigna, horizontal y moderna muestra tensiones y omisiones en aspectos como la coerción, la libertad económica, la protección social, la burocracia, las políticas lingüísticas y la gestión de la inmigración. Esta articulación se ejemplifica en la ficción periodística (2009), de Patrícia Gabancho, el documental (2014), de Isona Passola, y el ensayo (2017), de Antonio Baños. La representación aproblemática y contradictoria del Estado en estas obras revela la existencia de temores latentes derivados de la dificultad histórica de encajar dicha institución política en la compleja realidad de la nación. Además, los productos culturales analizados muestran la necesidad de estabilizar los nuevos significados relacionados con los significantes y en la cultura catalana.
