Guerrilla archiving: Documents for a feminist history of Latin American Cinemas

Abstract

This article centres on the development of the documentary which was created from the archives of Peruvian women filmmakers. The article reflects on the projects of preserving the archives of women filmmakers which began in 2018, the year in which the National Audiovisual Preservation Project Grants from the Ministry of Culture began. The article shares the experience of finding the archives of María Barea and Paloma Valdeavellano, who were both involved in women’s organization. It concludes that, although these archives have been kept in domestic spaces, this has made it possible to access memories that renew the history of Peruvian cinema.

Resumen

Exponemos el desarrollo del documental construido a partir de archivos de cineastas peruanas. Así reflexionamos sobre los proyectos de preservación de archivos de mujeres cineastas implementados a partir del 2018, año de inicio del Concurso Nacional de Proyectos de Preservación Audiovisual del Ministerio de Cultura. Luego compartimos nuestra experiencia en la identificación del archivo de María Barea y Paloma Valdeavellano, comprometidas con la organización popular de mujeres. Concluimos que si bien es precario que sus archivos se encuentren en sus espacios domésticos, esto posibilita acceder a las memorias que renuevan la historia del cine peruano.
