This article is an autobiographical account of Vizcult, a gathering of art education scholars interested in concepts and the possibilities of visual culture as a foundation for learning in art. In 2001, the authors, who were also the co-organizers of Vizcult, started the group as a gathering of scholars interested in a broad and inclusive understanding of the designed images and forms humans have and continue to create in relationship to everyday lived experiences. At annual meetings for more than a decade, the group explored diverse and evolving concerns associated with visual culture. This article provides insight into the intentions, struggles and contributions of the group.
