With all therapeutic relationships we embark on a journey with our client. This article examines just such a journey, one where the therapist and client moved together in a parallel process. These dramatherapy sessions were conducted with an older, non-verbal stroke victim and examine how the therapist experienced the transference changing through the therapy. This article explores work with a non-verbal individual with limited motor ability and how as dramatherapists we communicate with these individuals to create a therapeutic relationship and therefore meaningful therapeutic work.

From reality disjunctions to dramatic reality: Bridging realities through the performance of life stories in dementia care

The discussion is anchored in a practice vignette from a single-case life story performance. Two features of the methodology, the ‘saying hullo again’ metaphor from narrative therapy and dramatic reality from drama therapy, are highlighted. Their combined effectiveness as an alternative framework for understanding and working with reality disjunctions in dementia care is discussed.

‘The space between’: Role-play as a tool in the treatment of child sexual abuse

A dramatherapy model that has been proposed for the treatment of child sexual abuse is the regenerative model. The regenerative model utilises role-play as a form of treatment and allows children to experiment with different roles in order to gain control of their experience and feel safe again. This article discusses a dramatherapy approach to the treatment of child sexual abuse on the basis of the regenerative model. It first introduces the model, and more specifically the concept of ‘the space between’ the therapist and the child. It then describes a case example and the use of role-play as a vehicle to explore emotions and thoughts and to process the traumatic experience symbolically. It concludes with the contention that dramatherapy, grounded on the regenerative model, may provide a safe space to work through the trauma relevant to child sexual abuse, in order to help a child heal and be able to form new, healthy attachment relationships.
