How Does the Representation of Psychosis in Joker (2019) Provide Stereotypes That Affect Society’s Attitude Toward Mental Illness?
More LessThis article explores how representation of psychosis may perpetuate stereotypes that negatively affect society’s attitude toward mental health. To investigate this premise an extensive range of secondary research from the fields of film, psychiatry, and psychology is applied to a textual film analysis of Joker (2019). The broader themes in Joker mimic many real-life concerns; for example, gun laws serve as a reminder of how dangerous inaccurate representation might be when mass shootings are dismissed as deeds of the “mad” rather than the “bad.”

Camp Cinema and the Queer Experience
More LessCamp is a queer sensibility which has recently begun to enter the mainstream. By viewing a case study of several key camp films of the twentieth and early twenty-first century, it is possible to chronicle its radicalism, and its gradual co-optation by the straight gaze. Camp, while at times reductive, has served to mirror and affirm the vibrancy of the queer experience, making an understanding of its roots essential.

“You know how the game goes, Baby”: Exploring Intersections of Power in Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song
More LessExisting academic discourse surrounding pioneering Blaxploitation film, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (Melvin Van Peebles, 1971), regularly frames the titular character as the forerunner of an eventual collection of aggressive, hypersexual, and macho Black heroes. These texts accordingly examine Sweetback’s characterization with limited nuance, and therefore overlook the film’s more complex contentual and formal engagement with masculinity and power. Via close analysis of the film and marketing materials, I propose that Sweetback’s macho behavior can be re-contextualized via attention to his repeated displays of passivity, which jointly signal the film’s engagement with notions of “ideal” Black masculinity, generational oppression, and trauma.
