Gibraltarians’ collective identity has been formed both from and against these two historical and cultural inputs. British and Spanish writing about Gibraltar has tended to silence the voices of Gibraltarians themselves as they have attempted to describe and reflect upon their community, their place in the world and their experiences. Given this dynamic, this introductory article assesses strategies that four Gibraltarian poets, working in different periods, have taken to write their community into the world.

Sanguinetti’s The Calpean Sonnets and Giordano Durante’s West show Less to hide fulltext, buy and share links for: Colonialist paeans and postcolonial poetics: Leopold P. Sanguinetti’s The Calpean Sonnets and Giordano Durante’s WestThis article compares and contrasts the Gibraltar-themed poetry of Gibraltarian writers Leopold P. Sanguinetti and Giordano Durante. It argues that while Sanguinetti’s (1958) collection, The Calpean Sonnets, contributed to the cultural construction of a pro-imperial British identity on the Rock, Durante’s debut book of poetry, West (2017), sketches the emergence of a postcolonial collective self among the Gibraltarian people. In addition, the article argues that the representation of Gibraltar and of the Gibraltarians in James Joyce’s 1922 novel, Ulysses, serves as an intertextual precursor for Durante’s poetics and preoccupations.

show More to view fulltext, buy and share links for:Trino Cruz: La poesía como fluencia show Less to hide fulltext, buy and share links for: Trino Cruz: La poesía como fluenciaThis article offers a comprehensive overview of poetry by Trino Cruz, one of the most outstanding representatives in Gibraltar of literature written in Spanish. Although he hails from the Rock, his works are influenced by the complex area of the Strait of Gibraltar, with interesting resonances from Spanish, Moroccan and Gibraltarian cultures. His mixed ancestry and cosmopolitan education connect his work to a fascinating artistic substratum of Arabic, British, French and Spanish origins. His attraction to painting and the written word explains the visual character of his poems, as well as his translations. This article analyses the evolution of his poetry from his first books, Lecturas del espacio profanado (1992) and Rihla (2003), to his latest poems included in Mediodía del cantor (2022). Throughout his literary production, the Gibraltarian poet succeeds in articulating deep, complex poetry that shows social concern but never neglects language, which he considers the real instrument of culture. Metaphors and symbols are grouped in images of the writer’s journey, in his pursuit of self-expression.

Deep-time borderscapes in Trino Cruz’s poetry

In contrast to conventional views that emphasize human borders and migrations, Cruz’s poem shifts attention to the natural world’s influence on shaping cultural and historical processes. By delving into the submerged geological continuum beneath the Strait of Gibraltar, ‘Gharb’ emphasizes the interconnectedness between the human and the more-than-human, moving away from human dominance towards a more co-dependent relationship with the earth. This shift reimagines Gibraltar as part of a much longer geophysical history, one that transcends temporary political boundaries. In doing so, Cruz offers a perspective that resituates Gibraltar within a broader, more dynamic context, highlighting its role as a crossroads not just for human migration but also for the movement of geological and cultural forces across continents. This approach challenges dominant political views of the Mediterranean as merely a surface to be crossed or defended and instead envisions it as a site of ongoing interaction and renewal, where both human and natural histories converge and co-evolve.
