The following text is an interview with writer and film director Pier Paolo Pasolini which was conducted by Bulgarian intellectual and translator Vera Gancheva in 1974, during the 27th Cannes Film Festival (9–24 May). The interview was published much later, in 1984, and only in Bulgarian, in a book by Gancheva. In their conversation, the two parties discuss a range of topics, beginning with contemporary society’s moral decomposition; the mission of art and literature and the changing roles of intellectuals; and concluding with Pasolini’s radically new creative plans, notwithstanding his firm beliefs in Marxist thought, in both cinema and literature.
