Life satisfaction and quality of life amongst elderly Portuguese living in the community
Authors: Antnio M Fonseca, Constana Pal and Igncio MartinThe aim of this paper is to study the difference between life satisfaction and quality of life as general measures of wellbeing among older people and how both variables relate differently to individual, social, relational and instrumental determinants. A group of 234 elderly Portuguese living in their own homes in rural and urban areas were studied. The results obtained identify a group of individuals with low levels of schooling and possessing reduced income, which seems to influence the evaluation of the quality of life but not the life satisfaction. Life satisfaction, seen as a psychological dimension, appears as a variable associated more with personality characteristics and less with external variables, regardless of whether they are physical, social or environmental. The perception of quality of life seems to be clearly associated not only with socio-demographic variables but also with physical and contextual variables.

Technology and the servicelisation of labour: from immateriality to innovative uncertainty
More LessThis article discusses the concepts of servicelisation of labour and innovation in complex organisational contexts. We consider that, at the present stage of societal development, the expansion of services itself represents the course from one industrial model to another, i.e. to a set of ways or methods of producing that are different. It is thus possible to speak of a configuration of users. In a service economy, the service products are global and are not generally decomposable, so that it is the customer/user who assesses the satisfaction involved in consuming them, even being able to intervene in their production. Besides, technology and immateriality are now fundamental to the service logic. This article also proposes some alternative ways for analysing the organisational structures dealing with such new phenomena.

The international relations in the politics of the Partido Africano da Independncia da Guin e Cabo Verde
More LessThe end of colonialism in Africa, and the establishment of the independent states, was reached variously through peaceful ways or violent ones. In the Guinean case, the establishment of the nation-state was made possible by the development of an armed struggle for national liberation, in which the Partido Africano da Independncia da Guin e Cabo Verde (PAIGC) played a crucial role. The victories that were achieved in the Guinean territory were largely possible due to the diplomatic efforts requested by the PAIGC representatives. The exhaustive information sent throughout these years to the United Nations Committee on Decolonisation, and the presence of PAIGC representatives in international organisations, contributed to the positive evolution of the liberation struggle. The aim of the present article is to analyse the manner and the context in which the PAIGC obtained international support and its significance for the process of self-determination in Guinea-Bissau.

The first portuguese Art Agency: a case study
More LessAt a time when new places for art are emerging, the search for a critical reflection on agents and dealership processes is extremely relevant, in an attempt to attain something new that is sociologically significant and also able, perhaps, to contribute to an understanding of certain features of the present context of the Portuguese contemporary art space. The general questions at the base of this article are as follows: appearing in December 2003, what did the Vera CortsArt Agency model bring to the space of contemporary art? How is it to be understood within that same panorama? An art agency not taken in a merely descriptive sense but as an immersion zone, in an attempt to unveil a nexus of reciprocal interactions, i.e. by creating a dialogue between the configuration of the artistic field and the singularity of the case-study and then seeing how they question each other, and how both question the paradigms and the sociological corpus relating to art.
