After surveying the lyrics for proverbial references, it can be confirmed that, despite the different inclinations of proverbs and punk rock, they interact frequently and effectively in the lyrics of this band, demonstrating the versatility and adaptability of proverbs, which allow the songwriter to express his message in an ingenious and pithy manner and to achieve different communicative purposes. Whether this abundance of proverbial references is accidental or deliberate, the fact is they appear in extraordinary numbers.

From underground publishing to the present: A multidimensional analysis of punk fanzine culture in Turkey

Drawing on semi-structured interviews with fifteen punk fans conducted between 2022 and 2024, archival analysis, and field visits, the research analyzes their origins and roles in Turkey. Fanzines are examined as tools of communication, cultural production, and political resistance, exploring their evolution from anti-system artifacts to commodified objects in the digital age. The study investigates how the authoritarian environment following the 1980 Turkish coup d’état shaped fanzines as mechanisms of resistance, how processes of discovery fostered creativity, and how socio-economic dynamics enabled their spread beyond Istanbul. By addressing their cultural, artistic, and political significance, the research highlights the continued relevance of fanzines as anonymous, resistant mediums, contributing to the literature on youth subcultures and alternative publishing practices.

Resentment and revolt: The shared anger of the Brazilian and Nordic punk movements of the 1980s

Preliminary findings suggest that São Paulo punk groups actively participated in the global punk movement in the context of Brazil's military dictatorship and the shifting geopolitical landscape of the Cold War. During this period, Nordic and Brazilian punks regularly exchanged information and musical productions, sharing a common political passion. I interpret punk’s political and aesthetic articulations through the distribution of the sensible, fostering new ways of being together. I also draw on theories of resentment and revolt to illustrate how punk engages with politics and social formations in specific ways. Through an analysis of exchanges between Finnish and Brazilian punks, my article highlights multiple aesthetic and political dialogues between punk cultures in Norway, Finland and Brazil, shedding light on how punk’s political and aesthetic forces emerge as products of diverse cultural and affective interactions.

Changing generational dynamics among Estonian post-punk parents and children
show More to view fulltext, buy and share links for:Changing generational dynamics among Estonian post-punk parents and children show Less to hide fulltext, buy and share links for: Changing generational dynamics among Estonian post-punk parents and childrenAuthors: Brigitta Davidjants and Anita MaasaluUntil recently, Estonian subcultures were characterized by strict generational, ethnic and genre-based divisions, as was common during the Soviet era. However, in recent decades, these boundaries have begun to blur to an exceptional extent. Through an examination of five families, we explore contemporary Estonian post-punk fandom as a cross-generational phenomenon to highlight the growing cohesion between age groups within the subculture. Our goal is to answer the following questions: What characterizes intergenerational dynamics within the Estonian post-punk scene? How do parents influence their children’s musical preferences? How do families’ musical tastes reflect shared values within the post-punk scene and Estonia’s broader cultural landscape? Addressing these questions will allow us to illustrate the impact of wider societal trends on family relationships and identity formation within specific cultural contexts.

At the 2025 Punk Scholars Network US/Canada Conference, hosted at the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas, Fat Mike took part in a roundtable conversation with Ellen Bernhard, Stefano Morello and Paul Fields. The conversation focused predominantly on an upcoming publication of scholarly essays on NOFX, which Bernhard and Morello co-edited with David Pearson, and which Fields contributed to. Fat Mike discusses his views on the publication, appraises and adds further context to some of its chapters and reflects on punk scholarship in this informal interview. The interview was not originally intended for publication, therefore it has been edited for clarity.
