Abstract

Stephen Sondheim’s kindness and enthusiasm for the emergent artistry of others made him musical theatre’s ‘encourager-in-chief’. This article spotlights Sondheim’s distinctive generative geniality. It centres this aspect of Sondheim by looking at the ways in which people remember his role as a mentor who often wrote positive notes of support. It also spotlights his appearance (or representation) in two films – and , alongside an episode of the – as himself to highlight his generosity of spirit and willingness to help (and be an inspiration for) others.
